Background
Gartner explains: “Agentic GraphRAG represents an advanced version of RAG, where an LLM-powered AI agent takes a proactive role in leveraging a KG”.
Traditional RAG systems, relying solely on vector databases, can identify content that is statistically related but lack semantic understanding of the connections between data points. By integrating a knowledge graph, GraphRAG provides structured concepts, relationships, classifications, and rules, supplying the LLM with contextualized knowledge. This approach makes the vector space interpretable and enhances the reliability of generative AI outputs.
Bonfiglioli Case Study
BitBang collaborated with Bonfiglioli, a global manufacturer in industrial automation, mobile machinery, and wind energy, to design and implement a GenAI-based system for managing technical manuals and maintenance tickets. The solution combined Ontotext GraphDB, Azure OpenAI GPT-4o, pgvector, and Streamlit, with BitBang providing advisory and integration services.
The project addressed the challenge of retrieving both structured ticketing data and unstructured manuals. Key elements included:
- Ontology and knowledge graph construction: Developing an OWL-based domain ontology, mapping relational data to RDF triples, and importing the data into GraphDB.
- Unified access for multiple users: A single interface for engineers, operators, and customers to access critical information.
- Validation and iteration: Combining natural-language queries, SPARQL checks, and beta testing by domain experts to refine ontology quality.
- Deployment: The system became production-ready within six months.
Internal performance metrics demonstrated roughly a 40% improvement in correctness and robustness of AI-generated answers compared with standard RAG approaches.
