One of the key challenges in a Smart City is managing the continuous flow of data from sensors while ensuring that valuable knowledge and actionable insights knowledge are extracted from these assets.
Trailslight, an innovative solution developed by the Italian startup Trailslight, offers a cutting-edge approach to public lighting. Sensors embedded in public lamps monitor street sounds, detect the presence of vehicles or pedestrians, and adjust the lighting accordingly.
However, between installing the sensors and enjoying the benefits of smart lighting lies a complex layer of information and data management. This is where BitBang steps in, developing a sophisticated, information-rich interface to organize, monitor, and manage the sensors. It also enables the collection, interpretation, and analysis of the data the sensors produce.
The custom interface and APIs are tailored to meet the specific requirements of the Trailslight system and the needs of its customers, simplifying the complexities of managing numerous sensors distributed across neighborhoods. Sensors can be grouped and assigned to different controllers, addressing scenarios where parts of the same street are governed by different administrations.
Data gathered from sensors is immediately classified and made available to generate maps and insights with greater precision compared to presence sensors, while posing fewer privacy concerns than camera recordings. Trails City and Trails City Insights provide real-time information and maps about various relevant phenomena, such as:
- The prevalent type of traffic on different streets throughout the day, enabling targeted interventions.
- Noise levels across the city at different times of the day, enhancing awareness and data-driven decision-making.
- Sounds associated with unexpected and alarming situations, such as potholes, crashes, sirens, and unusual weather conditions.
The Trailslight system and the data it can gather enable cities to move one step further toward the shared goal of sustainability. By enabling the activation of public lighting only when needed, cities will benefit from reduced power consumption and light pollution. At the same time, detailed sound pollution mapping will provide valuable insights, empowering the development of targeted policies and enhancing overall city management.
BitBang’s expertise in advanced data analytics and its innovative approach, which has led to numerous forward-looking projects in the IoT, and manufacturing sectors, allows for the tackling of many aspects of complex real-time data management that arise from Smart City projects such as Trails. This includes handling large volumes of data, ensuring data freshness and timeliness, processing and storing data without loss of information, and guaranteeing privacy.
